چکیده

This article presents the results of an experiment designed to compare item-level nonresponse rates to paperand web-based versions of a survey questionnaire, focusing on attitudinal variables, that was administered to highly accomplished teachers. A sample of teachers reported their perceptions of professional community; half were assigned to a web-based version of the questionnaire, and the other half to a paper-based version. In both groups, the survey implementation procedures reflected Dillman’s (2007) Tailored Design Method. Item-level nonresponses were compared between groups for overall rates, and differential response rates by demographics, item position, item format (i.e., branching items and respondent-provided text), and item content. Results revealed small differences in item-level nonresponse rates, both overall and in comparisons between demographic groups. In addition, there was no evidence of differential item-level nonresponse by item position and item content. However, item-level nonresponse rates were considerably higher for fill-in-the-blank items on the web-based questionnaire.

Understanding nonresponse to the 2007 Medicare CAHPS survey.

PURPOSE The Medicare Consumer Assessments of Healthcare Providers and Systems (MCAHPS) survey, a primarily English-language mail survey with English and Spanish telephone follow-up, is the primary means of assessing the health care experiences of American seniors. We examine unit (whole survey) and item nonresponse for this survey to explore issues regarding surveying seniors about their health...

Nonresponse prediction in an establishment survey using combination of statistical learning methods

Nonrespose is a source of error in the survey results and national statistical organizations are always looking for ways to control and reduce it. Predicting nonrespons sampling units in the survey before conducting the survey is one of the solutions that can help a lot in reducing and treating the survey nonresponse. Recent advances in technology and the facilitation of complex calculations...

The Net Effect: a Comparison of Internet and Mail Survey Respondents

Multiple-mode surveys can have the potential to improve response and reduce survey error and costs (Groves, 1989). Because of the relatively low costs of implementation and the increased prevalence of internet access in the general population, Web surveys are an increasingly popular mode of survey administration. However, as some individuals do not yet have internet access and levels of compute...

Comparison of Item and Unit Nonresponse in Household Surveys

1. Introduction Survey quality is thought to be impacted by nonresponse, both item nonresponse and survey or unit nonresponse. The relationship between item nonresponse and unit nonresponse has been studied by Dixon (2002). Dahlhamer et al. (2003) also studied item nonresponse across several federal surveys. The current study examines the nature of item nonresponse and the relationship with sub...

An Iterative Multiple Imputation Procedure for Dealing with Item Nonresponse in the German SAVE Survey

Important empirical information on household behavior is obtained from surveys. However, various interdependent factors that can only be controlled to a limited extent lead to unit and item nonresponse, and missing data on certain items is a frequent source of difficulties in statistical practice. This paper presents the theoretical underpinnings of a Markov Chain Monte Carlo multiple imputatio...
